Grow Your Own Lamp with Mushroom Mycelium @ In Good Company Sustainable Fair

Sunday, July 15th @ 2:30-4:30pm

DUMBO, Brooklyn

About the Workshop

Mycelium (the roots of mushrooms) may very well be one of the most intelligent, adaptable and resilient organism on the planet! It’s nature’s recycler and communication network, it’s also the largest organism on the terrestrial planet! Come explore this fascinating fungi with us as we learn about its many functions and characteristics and how “nature’s glue” is being bio-utilized in many applications across industries as we seek more sustainable production processes.

Get ready to get your hands dirty, literally, when we walk you through the process of growing your own lampshade using mycelium. You’ll get to form a lampshade using Ecovative’s mushroom materials, watch it grow with the option to create unique outcomes and aesthetics and walk away with your own functional pendant or table lamp to bring into your home or office.

This biofabrication workshop is hosted by Danielle Trofe, a biodesigner who created the first ever commercialized lighting collection grown using Ecovative’s mushroom materials. She’ll share insights from 5 years of experience working with biomaterials and building a career in biodesign and biomimicry.

Launching Grow-It-Yourself Sustainable Lampshades Made with Mushroom®Materials

An Ecovative + Danielle Trofe Design Collaboration

Industry City, Sunset Park, Brooklyn

May 17-23, 2017

Creative consumers committed to the environment will soon have the opportunity to brighten their home or office with a fully grown lampshade made of sustainable materials – a lampshade they can literally grow themselves.  Ecovative Design, the pioneer and world leader in the use of Mushroom®Materials to grow sustainable products for the home and office is collaborating with award winning bio-designer Danielle Trofe, creator of the MushLume Lighting Collection, to introduce these new products.

The Grow | Lamp – the first designed by Trofe for Ecoative’s new grow it yourself product line — will be officially launched during NYCxDESIGN, 2017. These innovative lighting options will be on view at WantedDesign Brooklyn in Industry City from May 17-23, 2017, and available for sale at the event and via Ecovative’s online shop beginning May 17.

“Understanding the full lifecycle of a product helps you value it differently. We are continuously exploring ways to bring our innovative material science directly to the consumer. Empowering users to be a part of the growing process creates a greater understanding and connection to the objects, and to the effect those products have on their immediate environment and on the planet. Danielle Trofe’s imaginative design and commitment to our materials, creates the perfect formula for this collaboration.” – Ecovative co-founder and CEO Eben Bayer

“The overall goal of the Grow | Lamp is to challenge and change our ideas of what interior products are made from, how they’re made and ultimately where they will end up.  We want to disrupt not only the way in which we manufacture goods, but how consumers participate with interior goods. Through this experiential process, the user becomes the maker, connecting with the future of how we might better fit in on this planet, by GROWING biodegradable goods. It’s not just a lamp, it’s the future of design and YOU get to be a part of it.” – Danielle Trofe

100+ lampshades grown from mushroom mycelium

A cloud of lampshades grown from mushroom mycelium, each varying in size and height span the ceiling of the Riverhouse suite in the newly opened 1Hotel Brooklyn Bridge.  The sustainable materials soft texture and glow gracefully communicates the ethos of both Danielle Trofe Design and 1Hotels, conscious living.

The fundamentals of sustainable design is all about, deeply understanding the entire process from sourcing, to energy and water consumption during the production process, to where the product will ultimately end up. Cradle to Grave. The mushroom material utilizes a waste product (corn stalk) and combines it with a rapidly renewable material (mycelium) and harnesses only the power of nature to GROW an object that, in turn, can return safely to the earth, adding nutrients back to the soil rather than pollutants.
